FIGURE SKATING LESSONS
FAQs

1What are the benefits of Figure Skating?

There is more to Figure Skating than the obvious physical and aesthetic benefits. It strengthens physical, mental, and emotional health. It enhances musical finesse. It also teaches you important life lessons....even though you fall, this incredible sport teaches you to get up and never give up, just like in life.

2What should I expect in the first lesson?

If you have never skated before, you will be placed at the first level of the curriculum. If you had previous skating instruction, you will be assessed on the ice by the coach to identify your proper level.

During the first lesson, you learn to fall down and get up off the ice and on the ice, this is the first skill to acquire. You will learn to find your center and balance on the blade, march, and hopefully glide by the end of the lesson.

Please note that you must arrive half an hour before the first lesson to make sure you get fitted with the right size skates and complete the necessary forms.

3How long is the course?

Each skating course is 5-6 weeks. In the last lesson, there is a test conducted by the coach on what you have learned. Then you will be informed on which level to enroll in next.

4What if I miss a lesson?

Most of our courses are 5 weeks long. There are no make up lessons and no price adjustments will be made.

5When can someone start Figure Skating?

Figure skating can be pursued at different ages and levels, but there is a significant difference between taking up the sport for competitive or leisure purposes.

6How do I know which level to register for?

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned figure skater, you will be assessed by the coach on the ice to identify your proper level. If you have never skated before, you will be placed at the first level. The coach will conduct an assessment to identify your level then you will be placed in the proper group lesson level.

If you are a freestyle skater, you will still be assessed to make sure that your technique and basic skills are correct. If not, you would have to refine and polish up your skills in order to build on them appropriately.

7What is the difference between competitive and leisure lessons? How can I know which one is for me?

If you plan to be competitive, you need to start at a young age as in gymnastics and ballet. You will be expected to do off-ice training with a figure skating coach as well as ballet, and skate for several hours per week.

Figure skating for leisure can be pursued at any age and you will still follow the curriculum and see progress, and possibly participate in shows and camps (if you meet the level requirements).

8What is the dress code for Figure Skating lessons?
  • Pants/leggings that allow freedom of movement. Jeans are not recommended as they restrict movement.
  • No skirts, or extra long clothing are allowed. They can get caught on your blades while skating and cause a safety hazard.
  • Gloves, made from cotton or wool.
  • Long tennis socks, avoid ankle socks.
  • Helmets for all beginners of all ages, as well as all skaters under the age of 8.
  • Make sure to tie your skates all the way up, nice and tight and secure.
9Do I need to buy figure skates?

You can use the rental skates provided by the rinks for the first level (entry level). They are typically hockey skates. For all the other levels, figure skates are required.

10Do I have to wear a helmet during the lesson?

Beginners taking Figure Skating lessons must own and wear a helmet during training. Helmets are mandatory for all those in the foundational levels. This is for their own safety and protection. As they become more stable on the ice and find their balance, typically this is when they are done with all the foundational levels according to Ice Skate Egypt's curriculum; they may be permitted to not use the helmets anymore.

11Who can register and join lessons?
Lessons are for all levels and genders. Lessons start at age 3+. "Tut" age group lessons will be for ages 3-5 and they will have their own curriculum. Ages 6+ will follow another curriculum.
12Are there any prerequisites?

Pre-registration on Ice Skate Egypt www.iceskateegypt.com is a MUST. Code of ethics, Ice Etiquette, Media consent, and medical waiver must be signed and followed. You must arrive half an hour early before the first lesson to make time to complete the forms and get fitted with the proper size skates. Please don’t forget your helmet if you are a beginner.

Come with an open mind to learn a new and fun sport.

13How many hours of training are required per week/month to see progress?

Courses will be offered with an option for once/week and twice/week lessons. Skaters are encouraged to practice on their own in between lessons.

Typically you start with 1-2 times /week lessons, and gradually increase that to 5-6 times/week, skating multiple hours/day for competitive skaters.

14What is the difference between a group lesson and a private lesson?

In group lessons, you get to meet other skaters on the ice and possibly practice together. You may take private lessons for competitive development programs and choreography in addition to your group lessons.

15What are the different lessons offered?

Entry level: these lessons are for those who have not had previous skating instruction. Lessons are 30 minutes long plus 30 minutes of practice.

Foundational levels (4 levels): these lessons are to develop a strong foundation to prepare skaters for their freestyle journey. Lessons are 45 minutes long plus 15 minutes of practice.

Freestyle levels (9 levels including pre-freestyle): these lessons are to develop increased and continued focus on competitive elements (jumps, spins, footwork). Lessons are one hour long.

Private and semi-private lessons: for all skaters that have successfully completed all freestyle levels. Skaters enrolled in any of the above group lessons are eligible to take private or semi-private lessons.

16Can I sign up for private lessons ONLY?

Only skaters who have successfully completed all freestyle figure skating levels will be allowed to take private lessons only. Coach assessment is necessary.
